·       1997 - DROP IN

A Drop in Group was established for People with learning disabilities in Tameside.

The group met every Tuesday to organise Social activities.

“ We do snooker, pool, bowling.  Sometimes we have days out to Blackpool and Southport and to see Last of the Summer Wine. We get people together and have tea, coffee, biscuits, games and a chat”.

Through this group we heard about Tameside Advocacy.

·      1997 Tameside Advocacy - An Independent Advocacy Service for People with Learning Disabilities, they helped pay for three people and a support worker to attend a People First conference in Edinburgh.

“We stopped 5 nights at Edinburgh University, the beds were too hard.  We had one day off, we visited the Castle and looked around the shops.  The prices of kilts were very expensive.  There were workshops which we enjoyed”.

The meeting gave us the inspiration to set up a similar group within Tameside.

A Big Meeting was held.

·        1998 Big Meeting.

Organised by Tameside Advocacy project.  People with learning disabilities were involved in discussions and workshops.

“ About 40 people came and it lasted all day.  It was really exciting but made us very tired”.

In the morning, Manchester People First presented a talk on how they got their group organised and the sort of things they do.

In the afternoon a Committee of 15 People was formed through a Voting process.

People First Tameside was born.

    ·       September 1998

Tameside Advocacy helped us submit a bid for funding from joint finance.

This was successful.

“We’re very excited about getting our own money to get going properly.  Andrew got a well-done drink of scotch”.

    ·       April 1999

We interviewed for our Development worker who started in June 1999.

“We put adverts in The Guardian, The Big Issue and The Advertiser and we got lots of People applying. We interviewed 6 people and decided to offer the job to Liz Allison (now Wright)”.

    ·       October 1999

We moved to our own office in Dukinfield Town Hall.

We bought our first computer and were given lots of help buying desks and filing cabinets and furniture was given to us to help make the office.

“We set up a database of people who wanted to become members and decided to write out own newsletters".

“Liz helped to write a set of rules for the group, this is called a ‘constitution’”.

“We held our first A.G.M on Tuesday 13th July 1999”.

“Chairman, Vice-chair, Secretary, Vice-Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-Treasurer and other people were voted on our Committee.  We took photographs and had a buffet".

We now have a new Committee and hold meetings once a month.

We are networking with other People First groups.

We have presented our own workshops.

We are a part of Europe / England and North West People First.

“We went to Penrith for 3 days for the Europe People First AGM, Andrew was elected as a committee member”.

We are looking for Volunteers to help us.
